Manchester City have made a decision on the future of Oleksandr Zinchenko, however their stance has not affected their desire to sign a new full-back in the upcoming summer transfer window, according to the latest reports.
The Ukrainian international has been in impressive form under Pep Guardiola over the past few months, and has played an integral role in the defensive solidity that has maintained the club’s run of 16 consecutive victories in all competitions.
The form of Zinchenko has meant that French defender Benjamin Mendy has failed to get a look in when it comes to Premier League matches. And with Cancelo not being required at left-back, Kyle Walker has also struggled for game time in the team in the more significant games.
According to Fabrizio Romano on the latest episode of the Que Golazo Podcast, the decision from Manchester City is to keep Oleksandr Zinchenko for next season. It is claimed that the Premier League side are ‘so happy‘ with the player, and potential suitors can forget about any loan possibility that could include a buy option.
With that being said however, Romano does state that Manchester City will still be in the market for a new left-back in the summer transfer window.
On the topic of Zinchenko, and how close he could’ve been to leaving the Etihad Stadium in recent transfer windows, Fabrizio Romano reports that in September of last year, La Liga giants Barcelona were interested in the 24-year-old on-loan with an option to buy. Despite Manchester City reportedly considering this with a view to then buying a new left-back, the club along with manager Pep Guardiola decided to keep the player and give him an opportunity.
An opportunity that has certainly paid off given his impressive form over the past few weeks.
City now travel to Everton on Wednesday night as they look to continue their seemingly unstoppable form, and extend their lead at the top of the Premier League to 10 points – and sixteen points ahead of the reigning champions Liverpool.
