It’s the start of a new week and with it has come a whole host of fresh transfer news in the world of Manchester City, with several names in the elusive centre-back position coming to fruition, as well as a shock report linking a Premier League midfielder with a move to the Etihad Stadium.
All that and more in today’s summary of events…
City complete signing of teenager winger
We kick-off today’s round-up with news of a completed deal in the winger department, with Kilmarnock teenager Liam Smith reportedly agreeing to a Manchester City switch.
According to the Mail on Sunday night, the 17-year-old has put pen to paper on a four-year deal at the Etihad Stadium, with a training compensation fee in the region of £200,000. Smith is set to join the Manchester City academy setup on a scholarship at first next week, before entering into a three-year professional contract from June.
We’re underway in the January transfer window!
Four potential centre-back targets identified
The centre-back position has certainly been the main talking point amongst fans when it comes to the January transfer window, with City struggling to keep opposition attackers out for the large part of the season so far.
Monday’s David Ornstein column for the Athletic brought about an interesting insight into who could potentially fill the void left by some disappointing performances from Nicolas Otamendi and of course, the injury to Aymeric Laporte. Although it is unlikely City will make a move for a player in this position in January, four names have interested City officials, should they opt to move:
- Milan Skriniar (24 | Inter Milan), Mykola Matviyenko (23 | Shakhtar Donetsk), Nathan Ake (24 | Bournemouth) and Caglar Soyuncu (23 | Leicester City).
Tottenham midfielder set for Manchester switch?
Perhaps the most surprising story of the day came from the same report as the above, with David Ornstein of the Athletic suggesting that Tottenham midfielder Harry Winks is one of the names ‘under consideration’ at the Etihad Stadium. Manchester City officials are set to recruit in midfield in the summer transfer window, especially with Fernandinho (35) ageing and now playing in a defensive role.
The 23-year-old is also claimed to have been ‘discussed’ by Manchester United.
Ornstein continued to state that the ‘bulk’ of Manchester City’s reinforcements and recruitment will take place when eh 2019/20 campaign has come to an end, so we may be waiting a while before we start seeing some concrete rumours as to who may fill the necessary voids in the squad.
Adama’s not going away any time soon
Adama Traore – it’s fair to say we think you’ll be seeing a lot more of this name in the months come, especially if we were to see the Leroy Sane to Bayern Munich transfer progressing any further. Although some may find it ridiculous, why wouldn’t Manchester City simply enquire about a forward who has significantly impressed so far this season?
Italian newspaper CalcioMercato continued the trend of linking the Spaniard with an Etihad switch on Monday morning. They claim that Pep Guardiola has been ‘impressed’ by the winger, so much so that Manchester City are ready to make an offer for the 23-year-old.
The report claims that the Premier League champions are prepared to offer as much as €80 million to bring the winger to the Etihad Stadium.
Bayern Munich make contact for defender
It appears as though talk of a move away for Manchester City full-back Joao Cancelo hasn’t disappeared just yet.
According to TZ journalist Manuel Bonke, Bayern Munich have contacted the Premier League champions regarding the possibility of taking the Portuguese full-back on loan, however City have zero interest in selling their defender. It is claimed that Pep Guardiola’s side would only listen to permanent offers for the former Juventus man.
Ridiculous. But this is what we’ve got to contend with at this time of the year…
