“It got a little too much” – Defender reflects on former Manchester City coach

Former Manchester City defender Micah Richards has reflected on the impact of Roberto Mancini, as well as what it was like working under the current Italy national team coach, while speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live’s ‘Monday Night Club‘.

Richards made a total of 246 appearances during his time at the Etihad Stadium, securing multiple trophies including a Premier League title in 2012. Roberto Mancini went down in the history of the club, becoming one of the most successful managers and most influential coaches in the history of the side.

While speaking on the topic of Carlo Ancelotti, and how his arrival at Everton may impact the current squad, Micah Richards looked back on the impact of Roberto Mancini, when he succeeded Mark Hughes as boss at City in 2010.

Richards said: “[Roberto] Mancini shook it up real. We were doing double-training days, sometimes training at six or seven o’clock at night. He [Roberto Mancini] said, ‘If you don’t want to be here, you can go. If you’re going to be here, work hard. I don’t care who you are, how many caps you’ve got, if you’re not playing well in training, then you’re not going to get a shirt.'”

We respected him because he brought us home the Premier League. But the next season, it got a little too much. He was such a good coach and perfectionist, if you didn’t get it perfectly right, he would take it to heart and sometimes he would go a little personal. For me personally, he was the best coach I’ve ever worked with!”

Despite his departure coming shortly after controversies involving his reported ‘loss of the dressing room‘, Roberto Mancini maintained the respect and admiration of every Manchester City fan. The current Italy national team manager achieved three trophies during his three seasons at the club, as well as winning the Premier League Manager of the Month on two occasions.
