Pep Guardiola has revealed in his pre-match press conference ahead of Manchester City’s upcoming clash against Aston Villa, that the club have a clause embedded in the contract of midfielder Douglas Luiz that would bring him back to the Etihad Stadium.
Aston Villa midfielder Douglas Luiz, who made the switch to Villa Park this summer, has excelled since finally making his bow in the Premier League. The Brazilian has made eight appearances so far this campaign, scoring two goals in the process.
It had come to light in recent months that Luiz was in fact part of Pep Guardiola’s plans at the Etihad, had a work permit been successful. Issues surrounding documentation prevented Luiz from making a competitive appearance for City since signing for the club in 2017.
However, when questioned on the topic of the Villa midfielder, Pep Guardiola confirmed that the club do have the option to bring him back to the Etihad, although specific details as to when this comes into action were not revealed.
Guardiola stated: “He would’ve been here, but without work permit it’s not possible. We sent him on loan too, now he’s in Aston Villa. I think we have an option to buyback but life is like that.”
“We wanted him because we had problems in that position last season, we didn’t buy a holding midfielder till 3rd or 4th season, but rules here didn’t allow it. When he played in the States, he was really good. I think he has the quality to play with us.”
Whether or not Manchester City will look to activate this release or buy-back clause is yet to be seen, however, following an impressive start to his campaign for the Premier League newcomers, a return for the Brazilian could be a no-brainer come the end of the season.
