With Liverpool set to provide Manchester City with yet another heavily-fought title challenge this season, Raheem Sterling has labelled last season’s task against Jurgen Klopp’s men as ‘brilliant‘ in an exclusive interview with FourFourTwo magazine.
The 2018/19 Premier League brought about one of the most enthralling title races in the history of the league in its current format, with Pep Guardiola’s side securing the title on the final day by just a single point. Manchester City were forced to win their final 14 games, after a 2-1 defeat at Newcastle in January, threw the title massively in Jurgen Klopp’s favour.
Sterling responded: “Tough? No, not tough – it’s brilliant! You don’t want to be the only team in the league that wins football matches. You don’t want to play against the easy teams and win 5-0 every game.
Yes, it’s nice, but you win 5-0 every weekend, what’s the point of playing? It’s good to have these teams that are going to be competitive – as long as they don’t beat us too many times, of course! It’s brilliant to be involved in.“
Despite the strong form Manchester City closed the 2018/19 season with, Raheem Sterling admits the team did feel as though they had ‘blown’ their chances of winning the Premier League at times during the latter stages of the campaign.
Sterling continued: “At times last season, we were all thinking, ‘We may have blown this one’. But we kept going until we got back on top, and once we got back on top, we weren’t letting that go.“
