Atlético Mineiro director, Rodrigo Caetano has recently been speaking to Brazilian media over the future of Manchester City midfielder, Fernandinho – and provided an interesting insight into a proposal on the table from his current employers.
The 35-year-old is known to be out of contract at the end of the current season, and despite his impact on the squad throughout this campaign, there has so far been no proposals made by the club to extend his deal beyond June.
Manchester City had extended his deal into this season by an extra year, however there is now a sense that Fernandinho could be coming towards the end of an eight-year stay at the Etihad Stadium – after joining the club from Shakhtar Donetsk in 2013.
Atletico Mineiro director, Rodrigo Caetano has recently been speaking to Radio Super 91.7FM via O Tempo about the possibility of new signings at his club, and unsurprisingly was questioned on the possibility of signing Fernandinho on a free transfer.
Caetano said of the midfielder, as translated by Brazilian Manchester City page CitizensBR, “There is a lot of talk because he is coming to the end of his contract. He is a ‘reference player’ at City – not only on, but a lot off the pitch too. I don’t know if you know, but there is even a proposal for him to join Pep (Guardiola) as an assistant…”
“But he also has a situation, it seems to me, when he returns to Brazil, if he continues playing, he would give ‘preference’ to Atletico Mineiro“, Caetano continued.
Although the club’s director went on to praise the midfielder highly, he did reiterate that there have so far been no negotiations between the Brazilian club and Fernandinho or his entourage.
“He is a national team player, who has a ‘package’, as we say. Very interesting, because he is very good on the field and excellent outside. But we have no negotiations underway, at least at this moment, with Fernandinho or his staff.”
Manchester City have been linked with a whole host of defensive midfielders as we approach the summer transfer window – presumably with a view to replacing the seemingly outgoing Fernandinho.
The likes of Manuel Locatelli, Denis Zakaria, and Ismael Bennacer have all been linked with a move to the Etihad Stadium, however there have been no concrete developments on that front.
