Exclusive: Man City winger clarifies situation after translation error claimed he was not happy at the club

Riyad Mahrez has clarified directly to City Xtra that there has been a mistake during a translated interview from Algeria manager Djamel Belmadi on Tuesday afternoon, which claimed that the Manchester City winger was ‘not happy‘ at the club due to a lack of game time.

Previous reports from Sport Witness and DZ Foot had stated that the Algeria head coach said during an interview with Algerian television, “Mahrez isn’t happy in Manchester because he doesn’t play often…”

After contacting the player directly for comment, it has now been clarified that there had been an error and misunderstanding when translating the original interview, which was spoken in Arabic.

Belmadi had in fact stated that Riyad Mahrez “obviously wants to play more” and that he knows that the former Leicester winger will “bounce back“. DZFoot themselves have stated that the issue was due to Djamel Belmadi not being fluent in Arabic, which may have caused a misunderstanding when it was translated to French.

Riyad Mahrez has also clarified his situation at Manchester City, telling City Xtra directly that “everything is perfect” at the Etihad Stadium.

On the pitch, Pep Guardiola’s side will be looking to pick up where they left off in January, as they travel to face Burnley at Turf Moor on Wednesday evening. The Blues have the opportunity to maintain their three-point lead at the top of the Premier League table, with a game in hand on the teams directly below them.
