Real Madrid are exploring the possibility of signing Manchester City winger Riyad Mahrez (29) – and the Spanish side’s manager Zinedine Zidane has already established ‘contacts’ with Mahrez, claim FootMercato as relayed by SportsWitness.
City signed the Algerian star in July 2018 for a then club-record fee of £60m. After a mixed debut season at the club, Mahrez won the plaudits in the 2019/20 campaign, recording an impressive 11 goals and 12 assists in his 33 Premier League games.
The reminder of his status as one of the most dangerous wingers in European football has not gone unnoticed, as Real Madrid have decided to assess the possibility of prising Mahrez from City.
The Spanish side have ‘taken information’ about the Algerian and Zidane – who is also of Algerian descent – has made ‘contacts’ with his compatriot.
FootMercato add, however, that it is not yet known if City are open to the prospect of a transfer – and that, even if they were, the willingness of Madrid to part with the huge sum it would require is in doubt.
With Leroy Sane’s departure to Bayern Munich and Bernardo Silva’s indifferent form last season, City fans would be shocked to see the club sanction Mahrez’s sale.
Indeed, as the 2020/21 season approaches, there is every reason to believe Mahrez will be a key figure in Pep Guardiola’s plans, as the Catalan aims to make City competitive on all fronts once again.
