Manchester City secured their place in the fifth round of the FA Cup with a 4-0 win over Fulham’s ten men at the Etihad Stadium.
Ilkay Gundogan opened the scoring after Tim Ream was dismissed for bringing Gabriel Jesus down in the penalty area after just six minutes. Bernardo Silva fired in a fantastic goal into the bottom-right corner just over 10 minutes later. The action remained fairly pedestrian for the next hour or so, before Jesus netted two headers in two minutes to double City’s lead and secure a comfortable win.
Here’s how we rated the players following a strong Sunday afternoon at the Etihad Stadium…
Claudio Bravo – 7
He had essentially nothing to do, except make a routine save in response to Fulham’s only shot on target, which was hit straight at the Chilean.
João Cancelo – 8
A really impressive performance from the right-back, even in the relative absence of a dangerous attacking presence from Fulham. Cancelo made several good recovery runs to shut down any potential counter-attacks from Scott Parker’s side.
Nicolás Otamendi – 7
Like everyone in the back four, he was almost untroubled throughout the 90 minutes. He did well in moving the ball forward and holding on to possession in order to shut down any hopes of a Fulham comeback after the first two goals.
Eric García – 7
The young Spaniard also looked strong in only his 10th domestic appearance of the season for City, and didn’t have a lot of defending to do at all.
Angeliño – 7.5
City’s other promising Spanish defender looked quite dangerous throughout the game, consistently making dangerous runs down the left-hand side.
Ilkay Gundogan – 8
Gundogan fuelled an extremely dominant Manchester City from midfield and converted the opening penalty really well.
Phil Foden – 6
After putting in some really exciting performances this year, Foden didn’t turn up today. A couple of sighters were his best chance of having a real influence on the game.
David Silva – 9
The magician himself lived up to his nickname today, showing off some outstanding touches to evade defenders and create space for City’s eager attack. Letting the ball run past him to allow Jesus the space to win a penalty was a fantastic piece of vision and awareness.
Bernardo Silva – 8
The Portuguese midfielder looked back to his dazzling best during small parts of the game, highlighted with his rocket to double the lead early on.
Riyad Mahrez – 8
He was very unfortunate not to score considering his performance, but Mahrez was nonetheless impressive against a weak Fulham team.
Gabriel Jesus – 9
Gabriel Jesus built on a run of terrific performances by netting a brace and winning a penalty within the first 10 minutes. His movement for the first goal and reactions for the second, demonstrated what an exciting talent the 22-year-old is.
Raheem Sterling – 7
A decent performance from Sterling, including a good assist for the third goal. He did miss out on the opportunity to win back some confidence following a run of relatively poor performances.
Rodri – 7
Didn’t do much wrong after his introduction after 75 minutes.
John Stones – 7
Like Rodri, Stones had little to do following his substitution.
