City Xtra Premier League Update

Just to remind you of what you are all playing for, we at City Xtra are offering the winner of our league a Manchester City shirt of their choice and there are over 700 players battling it out to become our first champion!

The Top 10 remains largely the same going into GW23, with just two new managers joining the frontrunners at the expense of Diana Effah and James Sproston. We welcome Kevin Norman and Phil Hulme in ninth and tenth who both posted gargantuan scores of 98 and 101 respectively. Congratulations to you both – posting scores of that calibre is mightily impressive versus a high average score of 57 this week!

Seven of our leaders managed to post scores above the average, however, little can be said of our author who achieved a measly score of just 47. The gap between first and tenth has closed again, and now stands at just 77 which can be overturned very easily.

We predict some very stiff competition over the new few gameweeks, and double Gameweek 24 could prove to be crucial in managers launching their run for the title!

Top Three City Players of the Week

3. Gabriel Jesus (£9.5m) – 10 Points

This is the second gameweek in succession that Gabriel Jesus has featured in the top three and he had to score highly to brush off the in-form Kevin De Bruyne in GW22. In fact, it was De Bruyne who bent a sublime ball around the Villa defence to allow Jesus to tap home from six yards out and make it 4-0 to City at half time. Prior to this, Jesus registered an assist, rather fortunately, after the ball rebounded off the Brazilian and sat up nicely for Riyad Mahrez to hammer home. Jesus’ efforts earned him one bonus point putting him on 10 points for GW22, a fine return for the 3% of managers who own him.

2. Riyad Mahrez (£8.5m) – 17 Points

Riyad Mahrez is surely one of the first names Pep Guardiola is putting on the team sheet at the moment. Mahrez scored both of Manchester City’s opening goals against Villa on Sunday, the best being a jinking run in the box, rounded off with a lovely finish at the near post.

The Algerian is on a scintillating run of form and now stands on nine goals and 13 assists in all competitions for the season. Mahrez’s display in GW22 earned him 17 points, which included two bonus points, making him the second-highest FPL player in the round. Mahrez is now a sound differential for managers and his form means he should play a big part in the upcoming games. However, ‘Pep roulette’ may return to haunt managers.

1. Sergio Aguero (£11.8m) – 20 Points

What can be said for Manchester City’s greatest ever forward? Sergio Aguero put in yet ANOTHER historic performance for Manchester City at Villa Park. Kun was on-fire alongside Gabriel Jesus and scored a hattrick which, once again, sent him into the records books. Sergio’s performance made him the Premier League’s leading hat-trick scorer with 12, taking over from Alan Shearer who scored 11 during his career. Aguero also became the Premier League’s highest scoring foreign player. He equalled Thiery Henry’s tally of 175 goals with his first goal against Villa, surpassed him with his second and scoring again with his third goal to leave the Argentine on 177 goals. Aguero bagged himself and his FPL managers 20 points this week and can be a viable captaincy option, should he avoid rotation.

Top Three Captaincy Picks for GW23

3. Tammy Abraham (£7.8m) – Newcastle United (A)

This is perhaps the last time we suggest captaining Tammy Abraham for a while now, with upcoming fixtures including Arsenal, Leicester, Manchester United and Tottenham. However, the Chelsea #9 faces a Newcastle side on Saturday that have not won in the Premier League in any of their last four games. Chelsea, on the other hand, are on a strong run of form and have won three and lost just one of their last five.

Abraham is on a similar run of form, FPL-wise especially, having contributed with a goal or assist in each of his last three fixtures. If you fancy a differential in GW23, Tammy could continue to be a great asset in FPL this year against a Newcastle team who have conceded 10 goals in their last five matches.

2. Mo Salah (£12.3m) – Manchester United (H)

If you captain any of the Liverpool assets at the moment in FPL, you wouldn’t bet against them returning your trust in them. The rampant league leaders just don’t look like losing and this Sunday they come up against Manchester United.

Despite the consistency of Sadio Mane this season, Mo Salah would get my pick of the Liverpool forwards to run riot against United’s defence. Salah has picked up 51 points in his last six games which includes four goals and two assists. With former blue James Milner being out injured, Salah is on penalties which only adds to the temptation to captain him in GW23.

1. Kevin De Bruyne (£10.7m) – Crystal Palace (H)

If Kevin De Bruyne does not win Player of the Year this season, my faith in football will hit an all-time low. The Belgian is quite comfortably the best player in the league and is FPL’s highest scoring player with 150 points. Our Kev has seven goals and has the most assists (15) in just 21 Premier League games and has picked up almost half of his FPL points (74) in his last 10 games, demonstrating the hot streak he is currently on!

This week, we come up against Crystal Palace who have won one of their last five games compared to our four wins and one loss. Manchester City have scored 62 goals in the league this season and we wouldn’t bet against us adding to that tally on Saturday, and we’d bet De Bruyne is at the centre of the action!
