As another day in the January transfer window comes to a close, there’s been big news for Manchester City fans with a club legend suggesting he could extend his stay. On the whole, it’s been a VERY quiet day in the world of Manchester City transfer gossip.
Nevertheless, here’s a complete, albeit brief, round-up of Wednesday’s events…
He’s not going anywhere!
We start with the big news, which is that Fernandinho has confirmed that he’s close to matching a clause in his contract which will mean he stays at the Etihad for an extra season. Although the Brazilian’s current deal will expire at the end of this season, after last nights win over Manchester United he said “When I renewed at the end of 2018, we put a clause that if I reached certain goals, my contract would be renewed automatically… The club have shown interest in me staying, I have shown [my interest] in staying“.
These quotes can only be fantastic news for Manchester City fans, who have witnessed the 34-year-old make a staggering transition into one of the league’s best central defenders this campaign.
Later on in the day, journalist Fred Caldeira stated that the specific clause being referred to was that if Fernandinho plays in at least 60% of Manchester City’s games this season, the contract would be automatically extended. So far the Brazilian has featured in just under 70%.
A return for Jadon?
The other news today is that Manchester City have been linked, yet again, with former player Jadon Sancho. The source, Sky Sports in Germany, claim that Manchester City are one of many clubs interested in the Borussia Dortmund winger- alongside Manchester United, Barcelona, PSG and Real Madrid.
However, we’re yet to see any reports with anything more concrete or detailed than this, which we’ve been hearing for several months now.
Real Madrid bound teenager received Etihad option
The final story of the night came from Spanish newspaper AS, as relayed by Sport Witness, claiming that the father of Flamengo sensation Reinier (17) made a visit to the home of the Premier League champions to assess the facilities at the CFA.
It is claimed that along with Manchester City, Arsenal and PSG also ‘tried to sign‘ the teenager, however La Liga giants Real Madrid are set to win the race for the midfielder in a deal worth in the region of €30 million.
