The Norwich midfielder, 21, has enjoyed a breakthrough season in the Premier League. Cantwell, an England Under-21 international, has six goals and two assists in the league this season. The youngster’s versatility possibly appeals to Pep Guardiola, with the midfielder comfortable on both sides of the pitch.

With David Silva certain to leave in the summer and Leroy Sane likely to depart too, a space in the squad for a player like Cantwell will emerge.

As Ornstein asserts, a battle for his signature will not be easy, with a host of clubs certain to be interested; largely due to Cantwell’s English nationality.
