On the day that Manchester City faced derby rivals Manchester United in the Carabao Cup semi-final, and subsequently brushed aside their neighbours, the rumour mill has been in full-swing! According to reports, Manchester City’s defence is set for an expensive reshuffle, and a future England star could find himself playing in sky blue next season.
Here’s a complete round-up of Tuesday’s event…
Bayern make ‘contact’ discontent defender
Joao Cancelo has struggled to win over Pep Guardiola this season after arriving from Juventus in the summer. This has already prompted rumours of a return to his former side Valencia. Now, the latest speculation is from TZ journalist Manuel Bonke, who claims that Bayern Munich have had an approach to loan Cancelo rebuffed – but Manchester City are said to be open to a permanent transfer.
Ultimately, it would not be a huge surprise to see Cancelo depart in the summer…
Joining Cancelo on the list of players facing an ambiguous future; Nicolas Otamendi’s exit in the summer has been described as ‘probable‘ by Athletic journalist David Ornstein. As with the rumours surrounding Cancelo, this news is hardly a shock. Otamendi has failed to step up this season in the absence of Aymeric Laporte, and the inevitable arrival of a new centre-back will only further erode his opportunities.
Out with the old, in with the Kou?
As talk of Otamendi’s exit confirms, it is well-known that Manchester City’s chief concern is to sign a new centre-back. A familiar name often linked with the club is Napoli’s Kalidou Koulibaly.
90min today allege that Manchester City are prepared to meet the player’s £100m release clause in order to stave off competition from Chelsea and Tottenham. The Senegal captain has suffered a dip in form this season, but he undoubtedly remains a world class talent.
A Laporte/Koulibaly partnership sounds too good to be true…
Crystal Palace target young City defender
Another City defender has been linked with an exit this afternoon, albeit an obscure one. It’s the turn of Republic of Ireland Under-19 international Timi Sobowale to apparently begin packing his bags. The centre-back of Nigerian heritage has recently been on trial with Crystal Palace report AllNigeriaSoccer, and a permanent move could be on the cards.
Todd Cantwell in demand
David Ornstein brought further news on the Athletic’s podcast as he echoed earlier reports in the press that Manchester City are interested in Norwich City’s Todd Cantwell – alongside the likes of Manchester United, Tottenham and Liverpool.
Cantwell has been decent this season, and his English nationality ensures that he will be attracting interest from big clubs keen to fill home-grown spots. A bidding war will likely transpire in the summer, so we’ll find out how concrete City’s interest is.
[Insert obligatory Isco link here]
Like pigs in blankets at Christmas, it would not be the transfer window without a spurious report claiming Manchester City want to sign Real Madrid midfielder Isco.
Thankfully, El Desmarque have produced the goods with the claim that Guardiola has ‘contacted’ Real Madrid to sign Isco in the summer as a David Silva replacement. All we need now are links to Edison Cavani and Daniele de Rossi for a full house of throwback transfer rumours.
