Manchester City’s hectic winter schedule continues as the Blues host Everton, just three days after the 2-0 victory over Sheffield United at the Etihad Stadium. Carlo Ancelotti’s side take on the Champions off the back of an encouraging start under the Italian, winning back-to-back games against Burnley and Newcastle United.
We spoke to Everton fansite, podcast and YouTube channel ‘The Toffee Blues‘, to get their view on a number of topics including the influence of Carlo Ancelotti, the rise of Dominic Calvert-Lewin and how Everton should plan on stopping the in-form Kevin De Bruyne.
Thanks for joining us ahead of this one! The best place to start is obviously the managerial change at Goodison Park! What has been the biggest change in terms of playing style/attitude since the Italian came in?
You can tell that there has been a massive change already with Carlo Ancelotti coming in! His in-game management and tactical knowledge won us the Newcastle United game last time out, and the performances by some players has improved as well. Gylfi Sigurdsson in particular looks to be putting in a lot more effort – these are very exciting times!
What has been the reaction to the appointment of Carlo Ancelotti amongst the fans?
The reaction has been a lot of joy – a lot of fans (myself included) truly believed we were getting David Moyes again and that would have been disastrous and would have shown zero ambition! But the fact we went out and got one of the best managers in world football in Carlo Ancelotti is absolutely amazing!
Following Ancelotti’s arrival, what are the expectations at the club going into the latter stages of the season?
Realistically, I’m not expecting all too much. I would accept 8th place again, but ideally I’d want us challenging in the top six like we should be, and potentially getting a place in European football. We have a good enough squad to do just that but Carlo Ancelotti needs to get the best out of the team, which I’m sure he can do!
Dominic Calvert-Lewin has impressed many people with his rise at the club. What is his ceiling in terms of his own personal career?
Dom’s progression since he first joined the club has been amazing. I’m made up for him that he is now our number nine and doing so well! He’s had some difficult times and played in a number of positions, but he is now one of the first names on the team sheet and proving a lot of his doubters wrong.
How high he can go really depends on how much he can kick on from his recent form – I’m hoping he gets near 15 goals this season, it would be a great for him!
Kevin De Bruyne is certainly in a hot streak of form at the moment – how do you feel Everton should approach this game in order to keep him quiet?
Stick two men on him haha! De Bruyne is a great player and easily one of the best in the league. When he’s on form he’s unstoppable. Hopefully Everton can keep him and Manchester City quiet!
On a lighter note, as the transfer window is almost upon us – if you could sign any Manchester City player, excluding Kevin De Bruyne, Sergio Aguero and Raheem Sterling, who would it be?
Tough one! I would say De Bruyne, Aguero and Sterling would be welcome but I think having that player in midfield who can bring the best out of the attack is something Everton have been missing for a while!
Everton Starting XI and score prediction?
I’d imagine it will be this team – Pickford; Digne, Mina, Holgate, Sidibe; Davies, Sigurdsson, Richarlison, Walcott; DCL and Kean.
