João Cancelo is a primary target for Spanish club Valencia in the upcoming January transfer window, although it will be difficult to prize him out of the clutches of Manchester City, according to Super Deporte as relayed by Sport Witness.
Cancelo has struggled to have an impact at the Etihad since his summer arrival from Juventus, starting just four Premier League games to date and finding his route into the first team barred by Kyle Walker. This has alerted his former club Valencia to the possibility of a loan move.
The Portuguese right-back appears open to accepting a deal, whereas Manchester City are not willing to allow one of their priciest assets out of their grip, with initial contact between the two clubs yielding a “negative response” from the English champions.
City reportedly “refuse” to let the 25-year-old leave, even though he is worried about the “serious possibility” of losing his place in the Portugal squad for the upcoming Euro 2020 due to his lack of first team action. Valencia have now entered into an “evaluation phase” and will need to “rethink its strategy” should their “big favourite” Cancelo not become available in this window.
