Man City scouts identify two possible central defenders – January swoop NOT ruled out

Manchester City have started identifying potential defensive reinforcements ahead of the upcoming transfer windows, with two specific central defenders being monitored, according to the Telegraph.

Talks of fresh recruitments in the defensive department have been ongoing since the summer transfer window, with Manchester City losing Vincent Kompany to Anderlecht and Aymeric Laporte to injury at the Community Shield in August. Pep Guardiola’s side have also been hampered by injuries throughout the campaign, with the likes of John Stones, Benjamin Mendy and Oleksandr Zinchenko all sustaining problem at different moments.

It is no surprise to see further developments in the transfer mill on Wednesday, with the Telegraph highlighting that Manchester City will be ‘making checks‘ on a number of defenders between now and next season. The report continues by claiming that sources are NOT ruling out a January move for one of their targets, should they become available.

Interestingly, the Telegraph claim City are monitoring the situations of Villarreal’s Pau Torres (22) and Benfica’s Ruben Dias (22) – two of the best young defenders in Europe. So far this season, Torres has made 19 appearances for the La Liga side, scoring one goal, providing one assist, and keeping seven clean sheets. Ruben Dias has made 24 appearances this campaign, scoring two goals and keeping 13 clean sheets.

Manchester City’s stance on four central defenders was also revealed, with officials at the Etihad Stadium believing that Bournemouth’s Nathan Aké will rejoin Chelsea, while Napoli’s Kalidou Koulibaly doesn’t have age on his side and is also being monitored by city rivals Manchester United.
