Man City target Liverpool legend for coaching role – former midfielder ‘at ease’

According to the Daily Star, if Mikel Arteta were to leave Manchester CIty to take up a role at Arsenal, Pep Guardiola wants Xabi Alonso to be his new number two.

Alonso does currently have a job at Real Sociedad B and has already worked under Guardiola at Bayern Munich. The Spaniard already has a really good relationship with Guardiola, so a move to the Etihad would be smooth transition into a familiar environment; with Alonso also enjoying a successful spell at Liverpool as a player.

However, Tuesday morning brought a contradictory report from Mundo Deportivo, as relayed by The Mirror, stating that Xabi Alonso has dismissed speculation that he could replace Mikel Arteta as the new assistant coach. Alonso says:

“I’m at ease here [Sociedad], my head is only here. No proposal has come and I am where I want to be. I’m very happy.”

With Mikel Arteta currently locked in talks with Arsenal, Guardiola will have to think about a replacement with the eventual possibility of his current number two moving onto pastures new.
