The report alleges that Real Madrid intend to offer £67m (€80m) for City’s midfield prodigy, ‘which could prove too good an offer to turn down for City’. Foden (19), impressed in his most recent outing for City, boasting a goal and an assist in a 4-1 victory over Dinamo Zagreb on Wednesday evening.
The Colombian star Rodriguez has been uninvolved in first-team action for Real Madrid since October. He has been transfer listed and his exit is anticipated by club president Florentino Perez. However, the chances of Real Madrid landing Foden as his replacement must be virtually non-existent.
With club legend David Silva calling an end to his time at the Etihad Stadium in the summer, Foden has been touted as the man to replace the gaping hole in midfield that the Spaniard’s departure will leave. Foden may well be discontent with his lack of playing time thus far under Pep Guardiola, but there is no indication that the midfielder intends to turn his back on his boyhood club. His present contract runs until 2024.
The notion that Manchester City would sanction their biggest young talent’s sale in January, even for a £67m fee, has zero credibility. Nevertheless, it is testament to Foden’s talent and development that such a rumour linking him as a potential galácticos signing for Real Madrid can even appear in the Spanish press.
Additionally, Silva has not travelled as part of the squad for Sunday’s clash with Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium, so City fans should expect to see Foden on the pitch again.
