According to Bleacher Report, Manchester City are to start planning in the new year for two new centre-backs to join the squad across the next two transfer windows – and it’s the familiar faces of Nathan Ake and Kalidou Koulibaly that are the two players claimed to be targeted by club officials.
All the talk surrounding the bad form of Manchester City this season has been centred around the centre-back situation, and Bleacher Report believe the hierarchy are eager to take action. The supposed target, Kalidou Koulibaly, is said to be thinking of a move to the Premier League after a ‘strange’ year with Napoli.
City would obviously face major competition from any top European club for his signature, with Chelsea seen to be the biggest of those potential rivals. In recent years, Manchester City have been reluctant to spend big figures on some of the elite players available, but there might be a need to flex their financial muscle to acquire the best talent.
Since the departure of former Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany, and the injury sustained by Aymeric Laporte, City have been light of options at the back. Fernandinho has stepped into the role alongside a conveyer-belt of different partners including John Stones, Nicolas Otamendi and Eric Garcia, who have all either struggled for form or fitness.
With the Blues seemingly out of the title race, sitting 14 points behind leaders Liverpool, attentions will now turn to how Manchester City can try to make it back up to the top. The recruitment of a competent defender could be what club officials are now focusing on.
