The Uruguayan midfielder Nicolás De La Cruz has been increasingly linked with Manchester City in recent days. Now, Sport Witness have relayed the news from Marca in Argentina that negotiations between City and River Plate have reached a ‘more than advanced’ stage.
Sport Witness report that Marca allege that it has been De La Cruz’s acclimatisation to the system of River Plate manager Marcelo Gallardo that has won the admiration of Pep Guardiola. This season the midfielder (22) has recorded a total of fourteen goals and assists in all competitions. Initially, the Uruguayan had struggled to make an impact in his time in Argentina.
Additionally, it is claimed that City are prepared to offer slightly in excess of De La Cruz’s €22m release clause in order to satisfy River Plate’s demands. This apparent oddity is probably attributed to the fact that the player’s previous side, Liverpool Montevideo, retain partial ownership of De La Cruz.
There is no further comment on whether or not De La Cruz is likely to feature immediately in Guardiola’s plans or, as has been reported earlier, that the midfielder would instead be loaned out to one the City Football Group’s numerous sides scattered across the globe.
