Arsenal have identified Manchester City assistant coach Mikel Arteta as their number one choice to replace the recently departed Unai Emery at the Emirates Stadium, according to an exclusive report by the Mirror.
As reported by the Athletic earlier on Sunday, Arteta was in line to replace Arsene Wenger in 2018. The Mirror claim that intervention came from former Gunners’ chief executive Ivan Gazidis, which ultimately lead to the appointment of Unai Emery.
However, the hierarchy at the London based club have now identified the former Arsenal and Everton midfielder as their number one choice, ahead of other reported candidates such as Nuno Espirito Santos and Carlo Ancelotti. Pep Guardiola may have been in favour of blocking the transfer, however it now appears that Manchester City’s manager is ‘open‘ to his colleague furthering his career in frontline management.
Mikel Arteta is highly-rated by Manchester City officials, and has been praised by Pep Guardiola on multiple occasions. The improvement seen by many of City’s current stars including Raheem Sterling and Oleksandr Zinchenko has been accredited to the coaching and individual management of Mikel Arteta behind the scenes.
Should City lose Mikel Arteta to their Premier League rivals, a replacement for his position at the Etihad Stadium may be closer to home than first thought. Giovanni van Bronckhorst recently took up a position within the City Football Group to grasp an understanding of the inside workings of the organisation, and may find himself back in the dugout sooner than first expected.
