Manchester City are open to the prospect of signing Brescia’s midfield superstar Sandro Tonali, reports Calciomercato.
Tonali, 19, is one of Europe’s most prominent young stars. Unsurprisingly, he has attracted the interest of leading clubs in Italy as well as admirers abroad. Calciomercato allege that Guardiola has been ‘extremely impressed’ by Tonali recently and is ‘eager’ for Manchester City to sign the midfielder.
The need is intensified by the likelihood of rivalry from Juventus and Inter Milan for Tonali’s signature. Former Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini has already put his trust in the abilities of Tonali, rewarding his efforts for Brescia with three international caps. Tonali completed ninety minutes in a 3-0 victory away to Bosnia-Herzegovina earlier this month.
His CV is remarkable for someone still officially a teenager. Tonali has made sixty-six professional appearances for Brescia, registering six goals and eleven assists. He won the accolade of Serie B Footballer of the Year last season, for his performances that helped to secure promotion for the Lombardy side. Previous winners include Stephan El Shaarawy, Lorenzo Insigne and Marco Verratti.
Tonali predominantly operates as a deep-lying-playmaker, and is often compared flatteringly to Andrea Pirlo in terms of his playing style. This season, he has provided an assist against Napoli for former Manchester City favourite Mario Balotelli.
City fans will be hoping that Mario will help to steer Tonali in the direction of the Etihad Stadium, should Calciomercato’s report transpire to be correct. However, the report only suggests a move is likely in the upcoming transfer windows, so Guardiola may have to wait until the summer to land his target.
