Josep Maria Orotbig, the agent of Pep Guardiola, has today spoken to Bild to quash speculation in the German publication concerning the manager’s future. The magazine SportBild had claimed that Guardiola has become discontent in Manchester, and that Bayern Munich’s hierarchy are considering rehiring Pep in the summer.
However, Orotbig has downplayed the report. ‘Pep is satisfied and very happy in Manchester‘ he commented. He did not deny that ‘Pep has good memories of Munich and still has friends there’, but asserted that the Catalan ‘has never shown any interest in returning to Germany as a coach. This is a thing that would be just as impossible at the present time as last summer with Juventus.’
In May 2018, Guardiola committed himself to a new contract with Manchester City that expires in June 2021. Orotbig ended his talk with Bild by reaffirming that ‘Guardiola always fulfils his contract. I deny all rumours.’
These words will certainly reassure Manchester City fans. However, as with the ridiculous Juventus rumours that circulated last summer, most fans are wise enough to not attach much credence to such speculation.
Indeed, the reports do not seem to be grounded in any concrete truth. Instead, it appears to mostly be conjecture about Guardiola’s frame of mind following a difficult start to the season for Manchester City.
Nevertheless, Bayern Munich are certainly on the hunt for a new manager following the dismissal of Niko Kovac earlier this month. SportsBild had claimed that, alongside Pep Guardiola, Thomas Tuchel and Erik ten Haag of PSG and Ajax respectively were under consideration.
In spite of Orotbig’s firm denial, the German publication are keen to continue trying to fan the flames of their initial report. They even contacted Manchester City directly for comment. The club merely responded that ‘We do not participate in speculation’.
That should be the end of that, but brace yourself for further wild speculation about Guardiola’s future in Manchester.
