Manchester City have been scouting the diminutive Italian midfielder Stefano Sensi for ‘the last few months’ and would ‘love to sign him’, reports Calciomercato.
The 24-year-old signed for Antonio Conte’s Inter Milan in the summer, on loan from Sassuolo. Calciomercato claim that Pep Guardiola has been impressed by Sensi this season, and ‘views him as the perfect potential addition for his team’.
It further adds that the Catalan is said to be a fan of Napoli midfielder Fabian Ruiz and Brescia’s prodigy Sandro Tonali. Certainly, with David Silva leaving at the end of the season, there will be a space in the squad for a creative player.
Sensi is a complete all-round midfielder. He has impressive vision, strong shooting and passing abilities, reads the game well and is able to break up opposition attacks. At Inter, he has played further forward than he has typically at his parent club Sassuolo. Conte’s decision to burden the midfielder with greater attacking responsibilities has paid off, with Sensi contributing to three goals and two assists in his six league appearances.
In the manager’s trademark 3-5-2 system, it is Sensi who provides the creative pulse for much of Inter’s forward movements. Sensi also has an admirer Manchester City fans will be familiar with – Roberto Mancini. The Italian national team manager has rewarded Sensi’s efforts with four caps, with Sensi achieving his first goal for Italy in a 6-0 Euro 2020 Qualifier victory against Liechtenstein.
Mancini has publicly praised Sensi for his ‘great technique and quality’. Calciomercato have previously documented Sensi’s confession that he models his game on ex-Barcelona legend Xavi.
Calciomercato add that Inter Milan have an option to buy the midfielder which they have ‘already held talks’ about, amid the glare of other interested ‘big European clubs’ – including Manchester City and Barcelona. His permanent move to Inter is said to be all but certain. Thus, the chances of signing him appear unfavourable at present, as he is ‘untouchable’ as far as Inter Milan are concerned.
Let’s hope that if Manchester City do decide to pursue Stefano Sensi, the deal runs smoother than the last time the club tried to sign a promising Italian midfielder from Serie A after the Jorginho fiasco.
