An electric display greeted the large crowds on Women’s Football weekend at the Academy Stadium, as Manchester City ran out 5-0 winners against West Ham United.
Nick Cushing will have wanted a reaction after a loss in the last fixture in the WSL against Arsenal, and his team gave him just that.
It took just 11 minutes for Ellen White to give the Blues the lead, when her natural poacher instincts fired home from a Jill Scott flick-on.
West Ham couldn’t settle into the game, and Manchester City were piling on endless amounts of pressure. Steph Houghton’s free-kick forced a good save, whilst Ellen White also went close from a superb Tessa Wullaert delivery.
On the half-hour mark, Manchester City doubled their lead. Following some brilliant play on the edge of the box through White laying the ball for Georgia Stanway, on her 100th appearance for the club, to find the bottom left corner.
The goals were flowing, and Stanway quickly made it three when she found the same area of the goal, via the post, from a Janine Beckie cutback.
If there was anything still in the game for West Ham, it evaporated before half-time, when Jill Scott played a superb reverse ball which Lauren Hemp had all the time in the world to pick out the corner.
Tessa Wullaert made it five just after the break, with a brilliant whipped finish and City were in cruise control.
West Ham were trying to play on the break and it caused a bit of trouble for City – Stanway brought down Longhurst and received a second yellow, to end a brilliant display on a disappointing note.
With that win, Manchester City go above Chelsea and Arsenal to the top of the WSL table, before the London clubs are in action this weekend.
