With qualification for the knockout stages all but guaranteed, Manchester City travel to the San Siro to face an Atalanta side that caused them some trouble in their previous encounter at the Etihad. Three points tonight is obviously important but with a huge game against Liverpool on the horizon, will Pep decide to rest players?
Here’s how we think the team will look:
In goal it will have to be Ederson, especially with top spot in the group not completely set in stone. It’s also quite likely that Pep will want his centre-backs fit and ready for the torture of facing Liverpool’s front three, so I expect that Nicolas Otamendi and Eric Garcia will get the nod. The same can be said for the full backs, and I think Angeliño will keep his spot in the team whilst Joao Cancelo takes the place of Kyle Walker on the right.
In midfield things become a little trickier to pick. The holding midfielder is likely to be Ilkay Gündogan but, given that he’s played a lot of minutes recently, Tommy Doyle may feature. Ahead of him, the injury to David Silva and the suspension of Phil Foden make things rather straightforward: Kevin De Bruyne and Bernardo Silva will surely start.
The selection of forwards is also presumably going to be centered on keeping people fresh for Liverpool, which means starting places for Riyad Mahrez and Gabriel Jesus. The final starting spot will probably go to Raheem Sterling, but much like Gündogan, he has played a lot of football already this season. There may even be an outside chance of youngster Ian Carlo Poveda entering the starting eleven.
That means the bench would consist of Claudio Bravo, John Stones, Fernandinho, Kyle Walker, Tommy Doyle, Ian Carlo Poveda and Sergio Agüero.
