Manchester City finally got back to winning ways beating Birmingham City 2-1 in the Continental Cup this afternoon. Ellen White and Caroline Weir were the match winners in a hard fought win at the Academy Stadium.
City started the game on the front front and were looking to put behind them the disappointment of Wednesday night. The combination of Pauline Bremer and Ellen White was working, and the latter nearly reached a White cross for an early goal.
Chances were coming thick and fast and Caroline Weir curled in a superb delivery that somehow avoided the two strikers in the middle. Bremer almost made the pressure count before half-time too when she headed an Ellen White cross back across goal but only grazed the post.
But just after the break, the deadlock was broken. Lauren Hemp broke down the left and cut the ball back into a dangerous area where Ellen White, on hand to haunt her former club, turned in her first City goal.
After the excitement of White’s goal, there wasn’t much time to savour, as Birmingham instantly responded. Visalli’s low cross found Williams who turned past Roebuck to level the scores.
City needed someone to step up, and Caroline Weir did just that. She picked the ball up 30 yards from goal and rocketed a stunner past the helpless Birmingham keeper to fire City back into the lead.
A goal that would be enough to win any match and that’s just what it did. City finally end the run of four games without a win and will give Nick Cushing’s side a boost going into the international break.
