The Big Match Preview – Atletico Madrid vs Manchester City (UWCL)

City are now winless in three games after winning their first seven, and now go to Madrid to take on Atletico in what can only be described as a must win in the UWCL.

The first leg didn’t go as planned for Nick Cushing’s side. After a perfect start through Janine Beckie’s early goal, City didn’t build on the lead. 80 minutes of dominant possession later, one lapse in concentration allowed Atletico to equalise.

That goal now hangs tonights fixture completely in the balance with Atletico Madrid having the advantage on away goals. With the need to score and be positive, the attack will need to be much more on-song than Sunday.

Speaking of Sunday, the loss to Arsenal was City’s first in the WSL this season, but it was the performance in particular that would have disappointed the manager.

Ellen White returning to action was one major positive from Sunday. With her and Georgia Stanway back to full fitness, Nick Cushing now has a wealth of attacking options. Laura Coombs has also been training in recent days after her muscle injury, but won’t feature tonight. Karen Bardsley and Aofie Mannion both remain long-term absentees.

Will it be City who are celebrating revenge over the side who knocked them out last campaign, or will it be déjà vu for Nick Cushing. One thing’s for sure, it’s set up to be an entertaining game.

Predicted XI: Roebuck, Bonner, Campbell, Houghton, Stokes, Walsh, Weir, Scott, Beckie, Wullaert, Stanway
