Match Report: Atletico Madrid 2-1 Manchester City [Agg. 3-2] (UWCL)

It was Déjà vu for Manchester City as they were knocked out for the second consecutive year in the Champions League by Atletico Madrid. A 2-1 win for the hosts on the night meant they progressed 3-2 on aggregate.

It was City who had the first major chance of the game when Ellen White was sent through on goal inside 10 minutes. She managed to race away from the chasing defender but could only drag her effort wide of the goal.

Tounkara was beginning to threaten in the box for Atletico, and her header from a lofted corner was only just kept out by a combination of Roebuck and Stanway.

Just like the first leg, City had dominated possession but failed to make it count and just before half-time, Atletico struck. Ludmila, who created havoc throughout the first leg, managed to reach a long ball into the box and turn the ball back across the goal. Unfortunately for Steph Houghton, the ball deflected off her and into the back of the net.

City knew they had to score, and when they came out for the second half, they started to create more opportunities. Jill Scott headed over from close range before Ellen White almost scored before two brilliant last ditch tackles.

After all this pressure, it was Atletico who doubled the lead when Charlyn found a yard in the box and her shot was saved by Roebuck into the path of Sosa to direct home.

The task of two goals did seem to steep for City, and despite a late Pauline Bremer goal, Atletico hung on to a 3-2 win on aggregate.

City and Nick Cushing’s focus will now switch completely to domestic competitions with the WSL, Continental Cup and FA Cup still up for grabs. But the Manchester City manager will look back on the Champions League campaign with huge disappointment.
