Raheem Sterling has put a definitive end to rumours from Summer 2017 that he would join Arsenal in a swap deal for former Manchester City target Alexis Sanchez.
Speaking to FourFourTwo, the England winger said “The club shut it down straight away. I spoke to Txiki [Begiristain] and he said, ’No it’s not true. We wouldn’t be selling you; we wouldn’t be swapping you for anyone“.
At the time, Manchester City were struggling to secure a deal to sign the Gunners’ Chilean forward, with Begiristain refusing to pay above the odds for a player with just a year left on his contract. Sanchez eventually joined Manchester United that winter, with Henrikh Mkhitaryan going the other way.
Since then, Sanchez scored just five goals in forty-five Manchester United appearances and is currently out on loan at Inter Milan. Sterling has amassed over eight times that goal tally in the same time period.
