It was a decision that shocked many in the build-up to kick-off on Tuesday night, as Phil Foden earned himself a Champions League start in a game that ultimately decided Manchester City’s fate in Group C. However, the teenager more than repaid the faith put in him by Pep Guardiola, putting in an almost spotless performance against high-flying Serie A side Atalanta.

The biggest compliment you could pay Foden is that Manchester City didn’t appear to miss David Silva at any point during the game, with the teenager filling in for the Spaniard pass for pass. The only dampener on the man dubbed the ‘Stockport Iniesta’ was his red card late on in the match, following two very cheap fouls in quick succession.

When Manchester City fans were asked what they had learned from the demolition job of the Serie A side, one name continued to be on the minds of several City fans:

Foden will be hoping, despite his late red card in the game, that his performance was enough to convince Pep Guardiola that he is more than ready to become a significant and regular part of the upcoming Premier League games for Manchester City.
