Manchester City are said to be looking at Seria A starlet Lautaro Martinez, dubbed the new Sergio Aguero, from Inter Milan as the heir to his throne. Reports from CalcioMercato, as relayed by SportWitness, suggest that the sky blues are ‘investigating and evaluating’ the prospect from Antonio Conte’s Inter.
As Aguero’s reign edges ever closer to an end, with his contract set to expire in 2021, Pep Guardiola is sure to be looking to find his successor. With most people believing that Gabriel Jesus will be that man, there has been some slight criticism of his development thus far.
This suggests that Guardiola will dip into the market again to find that true successor, if Jesus is not ready to fill his boots and also fit into the idea of having two star players in every position. A loss of talent in such a key area will need replacing either way, and it seems that Martinez may be the man for the job.
The Argentinian is said to have a similar playing style to Aguero, which spurs comparisons between the two. However when looking at output and career stats of both players at the age of 22, the two players are far between. Lautaro has only 30 goals in his career, as opposed to the prolific golden boy who managed over 60 goals by that time. The Nerazzurri however are very happy with Martinez, and still tout him to be a future star. Inter Milan had given him a bumper contract, featuring a substantial release clause of €111 million.
Having been linked as a successor to Aguero at Manchester City and Luis Suarez at Barcelona, it is obvious that he has the talent and potential to become a world star. Whether or not Manchester City will act upon their review, it will be interesting to see how this one, or any other striker-links for that matter, will develop in the next few transfer windows.
