The Big Match Preview – Manchester City vs Atletico Madrid (UWCL)

Nick Cushing’s Manchester City will be looking for revenge in the Champions League this week as they come head to head with the team that knocked them out last season, Atletico Madrid.

With Atletico slightly faltering in the league, sitting a point behind Barcelona, Cushing and co will look to take advantage and take a good lead to Madrid. There’s also one caveat to that… Atletico signed ex Manchester City star Toni Duggan in the summer.

Despite a familiar face returning, Nick Cushing has confirmed a few names are back in training following injuries. Demi Stokes is back fit and available after missing out on international duty with England. Both Ellen White and Georgia Stanway are back in training but are unavailable for tomorrow, whilst Karen Bardsley and Laura Coombs are still sidelined.

The Blues are fresh off a 3-0 victory in the WSL, with the goals coming from Kiera Walsh, Tessa Wullaert and Lee Geum-Min continuing City’s 100% start to the season against Birmingham.

In the last round of this competition City scored 11 goals over the two legs, whilst Atletico needed a 96th minute winner to qualify. Adding to that a damaging 6-1 loss to Barcelona in mid September, City may be able to exploit some defensive weaknesses with the the likes of Caroline Weir.

Cushing will be hoping for the same focus and performance from the team that’s maintained this 100% start and come Wednesday night, will be hoping that doesn’t change.
