Manchester City are back in Champions League action this week where they play FC Lugano in the second leg of their round of 32 clash. Thankfully for City, they take a 7-1 win earned in superb fashion out in Switzerland two weeks ago into the game. So I think it’s fair to say that it’s a definition of a dead rubber.
The 7-1 victory in the first leg came through braces from Pauline Bremer and Caroline Weir and goals from Georgia Stanway, Aoife Mannion and Janine Beckie. The performance, particularly in the second half, was sublime and showed just how Nick Cushing wants them to play.
Because of our emphatic lead, there will be opportunities for some of the younger players in the squad to gain some vital experience as well as showcasing their talent on the world stage. Jess Park and Emma Bissell, who also featured on Sunday, could start the game as they have already been knocking on the first team door.
Other than the youngsters, new signings and fringe players could feature to give them game-time with our squad depth being seriously tested by various injuries. Matilde Fidalgo, Tyler Toland and Karima Benameur could also start the game following on from their appearance in the Continental Cup.
Injuries are still piling up with strikers Ellen White, Lauren Hemp and Georgia Stanway all still side-lined with their own injuries. Not that we’ve been struggling in their absence with Pauline Bremer in supreme form scoring six goals so far this season.
Lugano were tough to break down in the first half but when City clicked, the goals did flow. And expect the same tomorrow in a 4-0 win.
