So tonight begins the start of a big adventure for Manchester City this season, the start of their UWCL campaign. The first task is a trip to Switzerland as City look to take down FF Lugano in the Round of 32 first leg.
Last seasons Champions League ventures ended at this hurdle, with City losing 3-1 on aggregate to Atletico Madrid. After a decent away performance, and a vital away goal, Nick Cushing would’ve been confident to take Madrid back to the CFA and finish the job. But an early goal from Meseguer and one before half time by Da Silva stunned City, and they were not able to recover from that.
Just like the mens team, the Champions League must be a major objective with a star studded squad. However, Lyon are of course, the team to beat with their domination put of show for all to see last season.
Manchester City will still be without the injured trio of Bardsley, White and Hemp for their trip, with them all still on the road to recovery with their respective knocks. Everyone else though is expected to be fit, and despite any last minute concerns, i wouldn’t expect many changes from the derby win.
Roebuck, Mannion, Bonner, Houghton (C), Stokes, Scott, Walsh, Guem-Min, Weir, Beckie, Stanway
City will want and need to get a positive result. We can’t afford to let Lugano into the game with the threat they carry in attack. If we can get the front line to click i’m sure we’ll see the goals flow very soon. I think City will edge this, and i’m going to go 1-0 to the blues
