The Champions kicked off their 2019/20 Premier League campaign with a stylish win at West Ham’s London Stadium. Goals from Gabriel Jesus, Raheem Sterling and Sergio Aguero sealed all three points in Manchester City’s first away game of the season.
Here’s how we rated the players:
Ederson – 7
Made a fantastic double save to deny Javier Hernandez and Manuel Lanzini in an otherwise fairly quiet game.
Kyle Walker – 8
Provided an amazing run for his assist in the first-half. A strong performance throughout! Let’s hope he can keep up this level of quality throughout the season. Joao Cancelo certainly has some competition as we expected.
John Stones – 6
Made the odd mistake here and there in possession but defended well. He’ll certainly be happy with a clean sheet in the first game.
Aymeric Laporte – 6
Similar to his defensive partner, the Frenchman didn’t look at his best, but rarely looked in danger.
Oleksandr Zinchenko – 7
Good performance today. Look technically sharp going forward but always has the danger of being caught out in defensive positions.
Rodri – 6
On his League debut, Rodri made some good passes but never looked 100% comfortable on the ball. His confidence will grow with time.
Kevin De Bruyne – 8
Excellent run to set up Manchester City’s second goal. Looked back to his best in flashes. City fans will be praying Kevin will be more prevalent in City’s season this year.
David Silva – 7
Made a good start to his final season at Manchester City. Comfortable on the ball as always and knew how to get the best out of his front three.
Riyad Mahrez – 8
Decent performance from Riyad Mahrez today. Tested West Ham goalkeeper Fabianski early on with a dangerous shot then managed to grab two assists. He’ll certainly be a vital part of this season’s squad given the long-term injury to Leroy Sane.
Raheem Sterling – 10
Devastating performance from start to finish. Deserved his hat trick and more. Who’s missed out on those Fantasy Football points then?
Gabriel Jesus – 8
Scored Manchester City’s first league goal of the season. The Brazilian did have a goal ruled out through VAR, and upon review, it was a very harsh decision.
Sergio Aguero (69′ – Replaced Gabriel Jesus) – 7
Took him two attempts via a VAR review, but he got his goal with a retaken penalty kick.
Ilkay Gundogan (79′ Replaced Kevin De Bruyne) – 6
Brought on in the second half to keep possession and keep the ball moving. Four more years of Ilkay? Yes please.
Phil Foden (80′ – Replaced David Silva) – 6
Needed more time to affect the game but he looked fresh and ready. Hope to see more of him this season.
